At the Christmas party this year, you just received an expensive watch, a bonus check larger than ever before, and a special gold pin.
You were recognized as having retired or will retire on a certain date. At the party, the president made some funny comments about your work over the years and it was good for a laugh. There were spotlights on you and you were feeling just a bit uncomfortable.
Or are you?
Often the feeling of having reached retirement is not all it's hyped up to be. True, you might be doing okay financially and have enough to live on but it could be that you are still not ready.
You're not quite sold on this compulsory retirement mandate. It makes absolutely no sense to you or anyone else why we have to give up our jobs because of it. There are some who hate the idea of retirement and want to work every day of their life. Working to the end prevents these type of people from getting bored. Some just want to keep on working because they have not met their personal goals yet.
Forget "mandatory," and think about what you really want to do. Having a purpose in life is what gives living its spark, for heaven's sake. Why usher you gently out the door if you're just not ready to go?
What is interesting is that it has been shown that 50 percent of retirees actually go out and work somewhere new within the six month period following retirement.
Mostly it is because retirement is analogous to boredom. The American Association of Retired Persons has determined that 50 percent of the folks who retire get a full-time job afterwards. Some get a part-time job while some even start their own business. Actually this would be a very good time to start your own business.
Whatever you do, whether it's just enjoying lying on the couch and watching old films or joining clubs and reconnecting with people and the community in ways you never had time to before, or if you want to pursue a completely new field, this is imperative: You MUST do something that makes you happy, that genuinely will please you. You must WANT to get out of bed to go to work; forget the burdens of the past 30-something years or so - now is the time to be content and just enjoy yourself.
Don't find new work that is too easy. You want something that will require some perspiration on your part. Real easy work will bore you as well.
If you have a hard time finding something to do as a retired person, your friends and relatives will probably come up with some. You will probably get recommendations such as golfing, part-time security officer on the night-shift, or build a patio in your backyard. There might even be a recommendation to travel.
One caution however: While your friends and family all have the best of intents behind their suggestions, make sure if you choose to do one of them that this is really what you want to do.
Just consider your life-long hobbies and interests and put them to use in any environment you please. Please! This is the only chance you may ever have to do exactly what you want! Seize it!
No one can deny a definite "perk" of finding another new "career" after you have retired: If you don't like your new job then all you have to do is quit. You now can politely just leave the job if you don't like it - something you never even think of doing before.
There are many advantages to retirement. You just have to find what fits you and your dreams and go for it. It will be the best time in your entire life.
